"This famous Scottish locational name derives from the Barony of Dunbar in the county of Berwick. The surname, it is claimed, descends from Earl Gospatric of Northumberland, c.1070, whose grandfather was the lay abbot of Dunkeld, although the connection is unclear. The surname in its recognisable form was not recorded until the 13th century. Thereafter Dunbars played an important role in Scottish and the Border history. At various times from the 14th century they held considerable estates in Wigtownshire, where they were prominent amongst the Border clans that caused mayhem throughout Northern England, and the more gentile parts of Scotland. They also held lands in Caithness from the 15th century. Early recordings include such examples as James Dunbar, captured and held as a prisoner at Knaresborough in Yorkshire in 1425, whilst another James Dunbar was given safe conduct into England in 1451. The surname development has also produced such examples Dumbar, Dumbare and Dounbare. The coat of arms has the distinctive blazon of a white lion rampant on a red field, on a white bordure, a semee of red roses. The crest is a horses head. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John de Dunbar, which was dated 1266."[Internet Surname Database] The town of Dunbar, at the mouth of the Frith of Forth, Scotland, takes its name from the gaelic 'Dunabar', which translates as 'the castle, town, or fort on the height or summit'. The family appears in townlands on the border of Carnteel & Killeeshil parishes. This family is listed in Griffith's with the spelling "Dunbane". They are the only Dunbane's listed in Co Tyrone. Annie Irwin was probably the d/o George Irwin, born c.1809, Cavey townland, Errigal Keerogue parish, Co Tyrone, Ireland {Refer to Tyrone Irwin Chart} This connection suggests that Isabella & Richard were siblings. Isabella was George Irwin's mother and families repeatedly intermarried in Co Tyrone in the 1700's and 1800's. Note that the name Isabella occurs several times in Richard's family.

"Killeshill, Killishil, or Killeshal, a parish, in the barony of Dungannon, county of Tyrone, and province of Ulster, 6 miles (SW) from Dungannon, on the road from that place to Ballygawley; containing 4615 inhabitants. This parish was formed by order of council in 1732, by separating 27 townlands from the parish of Carrenteel, and Archbishop Robinson endowed the living with the townland of Glencal for a glebe, which was exchanged for the present glebe adjoining the church. According to the Ordnance survey it comprises 9839 1/4 statute acres (including a detached portion of 241 1/4 acres), of which 8879 are applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £4817 per annum. About half the land is arable, one-fourth pasture, and the remainder bog and waste land; limestone is abundant and is burnt for manure. The soil is cold and thin, but is well cultivated: the inhabitants combine weaving with their agricultural pursuits. The principal seat is Anahue, the residence of H. Crosslee, Esq. The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Armagh, and in the gift of the Lord Primate; the tithes amount to £300. The church is a small neat edifice, built in 1776 by aid of a gift of £481 from the late Board of First Fruits. The glebe-house was erected by aid of a gift of £100, in 1817, from the same Board: the glebe comprises 514a. 3r. 26p. In the R. C. divisions this parish forms part of the union or district of Donaghmore; it has no chapel, but an altar in the open air. There are places of worship for Presbyterians in connexion with the Synod of Ulster and the Seceding Synod. The parochial school, in which are about 140 children, is on Erasmus Smith's foundation, and is aided by the rector; the late Rev. D. Kelly contributed £50 towards the erection of the school-house: there are five other public-schools, two of which are aided by a donation of £7 per annum from Col. Verner, and two by £8 per annum from J. Gough, Esq.; they afford instruction to about 440 children."[Lewis 1837]

"Five-Mile-Town, or Blessingbourn, a post-town, in the parish and barony of Clogher, county of Tyrone, and province of Ulster, 6 miles (SW) from Clogher, and 79 3/4 (NW) from Dublin, on the road from Lisnaskea to Clogher, and on the confines of the county of Fermanagh; containing 758 inhabitants. This place has been sometimes called Mount-Stewart, from the name of its founder, Sir Wm. Stewart, to whom Jas. I. granted 2000 acres of land, called Ballynacoole. Prior to 1619, Sir William had built the castle of Aghentine, and commenced the village, which was occupied by British tenants. He afterwards obtained a charter for markets and fairs; the latter are now held on the third Monday in every month. The town is gradually improving: it consists of one principal and two smaller streets, and comprises about 140 houses, several of which are modern and well built. A constabulary police force is stationed here, and petty sessions are held on alternate Thursdays. A neat chapel of ease, with a spire, was built in 1750, at the expense of Mr. Armor. A public school is supported by Col. Montgomery, who built the school-house; and there are two other public schools. Near the town is Blessingbourn Cottage, the neat residence of Col. Montgomery. The ruins of Aghantine castle, in the neighbourhood, are boldly situated on elevated ground: it was destroyed by Sir Phelim O'Nial, in 1641."[Lewis 1837] Fivemiletown was known before the Plantation of Ulster as Ballylurgan, meaning "town of the long ridge". In 2009 the population was 1,128. The village is famous for its creamery, established in 1898. Fivemiletown Creamery originally produced butter and milk, but now exports speciality cheeses across Europe and North America. Fivemiletown's English name derives from its location: five Irish miles (one Irish mile = 1.27 Statute Miles/2048 m) from its nearest neighbours: Clogher, Brookeborough and Tempo. Margetson Armar of Castlecoole purchased lands in the area around Blessingbourne and his descendants, the Montgomery family, helped form the nucleus of a settlement now known as Fivemiletown. Fivemiletown is set deep in the picturesque Clogher Valley. It is a commercial centre for the outlying rural population. Fivemiletown had weekly markets for the local linen industry and other cloth merchants since the 1830’s. The farming industry has however been the backbone to its economy and has supported many jobs in the village for several generations at least. On higher ground, approaching the summit of Murley Mountain, there are numerous peat bogs.[Wikipedia] Hubbardston is a town in Worcester County, in the Worcester metro area, Massachusetts, USA. The community was named after Thomas Hubbard, who promised to provide window glass for the first meeting place if the community was named for him. The population, in 2000, was 3,909.[Epodunk]

Clogher (Irish: Clochar) is a village in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, situated on the River Blackwater, 29km south of Omagh. Although home to a Church of Ireland cathedral, by population it is a village. The UK census of 2001 recorded a population of 309. It lies within the Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council area. Clogher is a place-name which means something to do with or made of stone. In this case it must refer to stone building at the royal ring-fort or cathedral. No early stonework is visible today, but archaeologists found a building which had already tumbled into rubble by the 5th century. Clogher is said to have been the location of a gold pagan idol named Cermand Cestach.[Wikipedia] Clogher, an incorporated market and post-town, parish, and the head of a diocese, in the barony of Clogher, county of Tyrone, and province of Ulster; containing, with the towns of Augher and Five-mile-town, and the village of Newtown-Saville 17,996 inhabitants, of which number, 523 are in the town. This place is said to have derived its name from a stone covered with gold, which in pagan times is reported to have made oracular responses. The Clogh-or, or "golden stone," was preserved long after the abolition of paganism; for McGuire, canon of Armagh, who wrote a commentary on the registry of Clogher, in 1490, says "that this sacred stone is preserved at Clogher, on the right of the entrance into the church, and that traces of the gold with which it had been formerly covered by the worshippers of the idol called Cermaed Celsetacht are still visible." Clogher is called by Ptolemy Rhigia or Regia; and according to some authors, St. Patrick founded and presided over a monastery here, which he resigned to St. Kertenn when he went to Armagh, to establish his famous abbey there; but according to others, it was built at the command of St. Patrick in the street before the royal palace of Ergal, by St. Macartin, who died in 506, and from its vicinity to this palace both the abbey and the town appear anciently to have been called Uriel or Ergal. In 841, the abbot Moran Mac Inrachty was slain by the Danes. In 1041 the church was rebuilt and dedicated to St. Macartin. In 1395 the abbey, cathedral, two chapels, the episcopal residence, and 32 other houses, were destroyed by fire. In 1610 James I annexed the abbey and its revenues to the see of Clogher, by which it was made one of the richest in the kingdom. The town is situated on the river Blackwater, the source of which is in the parish, and consists of one row of 90 houses, the northern side only being built upon. Some of the houses are large, handsome, and well built with hewn stone, and slated. The episcopal palace is a large and handsome edifice close to the cathedral, on the south side of the town, and consists of a centre with two wings: the entrance is in the north front by an enclosed portico, supported by lofty fluted columns. It is built throughout of hewn freestone, and standing on elevated ground commands extensive views over a richly planted undulating country. Attached to the palace is a large and well-planted demesne of 566 acres, encircled by a stone wall; and within it are the remains of the royal dwelling-place of the princes of Ergallia. The market is on Saturday; the market-house was built by Bishop Garnett. Fairs for live stock are held on the third Saturday in every month. The market was granted to the bishop by letters patent dated April 20th, 1629: he was also authorised to appoint two fairs and receive the profits of the market and fairs. The old fairs, which are supposed to have been granted by the charter, are held on May 6th and July 26th. The parish is of great extent, and comprehends the manors of Augher, in which is the town of that name; Clogher, in which is the town of Clogher; Blessingburne, in which is the town of Five-mile-Town; Mount-Stewart; and part of the manor of Killyfaddy, and the rest of which is in the adjoining parish of Donagheavy: there are eight townlands of the manor of Clogher, called abbey lands, which are tithe-free. It contains 49,761 statute acres, according to the Ordnance survey, of which 30,000 are good arable and pasture land, 213 ¼ are water, and 19,761 are waste heath and bog, the greater part of which is, however, highly improvable; of its entire surface, 43,754 acres are applotted under the tithe act. The land in the vicinity of the town is remarkably fertile and well cultivated; freestone and limestone are abundant, and there are indications of coal and lead ore. Clogher is situated on a lofty eminence, in the midst of a rich and diversified country encircled by mountains, which on the south approach within one mile, and on the north within two miles of the town, and the highest of which is Knockmany. Slieve Beagh, on the southern border of the parish, rises to an elevation of 1254 feet above the level of the sea. The cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Macartin, and from time immemorial has been used as the parish church, was built in the ancient style of English architecture in 1744. It is a large and handsome cruciform structure, with a lofty square tower rising from the west front, in which is the principal entrance: the throne, which is very beautiful, occupies the western angle of the south transept, and the whole of the interior is handsomely fitted up. There are two chapels of ease in the parish, one at Five-mile-Town, or Blessingburne, and one at Newtown-Saville; and divine service is regularly performed every Sunday in the market-house at Augher, in several of the school-houses in distant parts of the parish, and also at Lislie during the summer. The Roman Catholic parish is co-extensive with that of the Established Church, and there are chapels at Aghadrummond, Escragh, and Aghentine; there are also places of worship for Presbyterians at Longridge and Aghentine.[Lewis 1837]

There is no evidence linking John, William & James, however they were all living in the same parish with no other Dunbar's in the parish or any of the adjacent parishes. No trace of the family by 1860 in the Griffith's index. A Dunbar family that appears in Clogher parish in the late 1800's is from the Dunbar's of Killeeshil. Possibly related to the Dunbar's of Carnteel & Killeeshil - the only other Dunbar's in southern & central Co Tyrone. Apart from a Dunbar family in the north-east at Cookstown that may not be native to Co Tyrone, all other Dunbar's from Co Tyrone pre-1900 are in the far west, near Castlederg. John may be a brother of Isabella & Richard of Carnteel & Killeeshil who were of the same generation as John.

This family first appears in Co Tyrone in the 1850's. There is no evidence of Henry or Alexander in the 1830ish Tithe Applotment Books nor in the 1796 Flax List. They possibly emigrated from another county. Only two members of this family appear to be living in Co Tyrone in 1911, both of whom were Roman Catholic, unlike all other Dunbar's of Co Tyrone who were either Presbyterian or Church of Ireland. This further supports the idea that the family arrived in Co tyrone from elsewhere in the 1850s (or possibly a decade or two earlier, but after 1833).

The townland of Carrickadartan is in the far west of Ardstraw parish & borders the townlands of Castlebane & Upper Third. Upper Third borders Berryfort townland in the neighbouring parish of Urney. The closest town to all of these townlands is Castlederg in Urney parish. The 1860 Griffith's lists two Dunbars in the area: John & Matthew. I have assumed that Matthew was the father & John the elder son, as given below, however it is possible that John was the father (he did have more land). I have assumed Matthew was the father since David, Matthew Jr & William all named sons, Matthew, whilst there was only one son named John. I have associated John with the elder son who was born before 1835, married Margaret and died before 1911, although there is no evidence suggesting the forename of Margaret's husband. The fornames in this family group suggest a connection with the Dunbar family living in Cappagh parish, Co Tyrone.

Another second block (No.1) was co-leased with John Dunbar & was comprised of 7 acres 1 rood & 17 perches of land, with Matthew's share of the annual ratable valuation being 15s.[27] Matthew's total annual ratable valuation for 1859 & 1860 was £1 10s.[27] In turn Matthew leased out a property in Carrickadartan townland.[27] Block 1b, a house (no land), was leased to Matthew Walker at annual ratable valuation in 1859 & 1860 of 10s.[27] Married unknown. The use of shared forenames and the appearance within a small geographical area indicate that John & Matthew (the younger) were both sons of Matthew (the older). Matthew (the older) & John (possibly his oldest son who inherits the family farm) appear in Upper Bodoney parish in the 1796 flax list. In the same year Matthew (the younger) appears in Cappagh parish, a few miles to the south. The Upper Bodoney townlands associated with this family grouping lie in the far west of the parish (the parish town being Plumbridge or Plumb Bridge, on the southern border of Glencoppogagh), on the border with the parish of Ardstraw. In the 1790's a branch settled in the townlands of Gortgranagh & Lislap West in the parish of Cappagh (bordering Grange townland, Ardstraw). In the mid 1800s the Upper Bodoney family appears to have split again into two family groups, one in the townlands of Letterbrat, Glencoppogagh & Aghalane. The second group was in the far south-west of Upper Bononey, centred on the townlands of North & South Lislea & Learden Lower.

The fornames in this family group suggest a connection with the Dunbar family living in Carrickadartan parish, Co Tyrone. John of Carrickadartan may have been a nephew or younger brother of Matthew of Upper Bodoney.

Newtonstewart is a town in the parish of Ardstraw, Co Tyrone, located in the north-west of the county. The baptism for only one of Daniel's children is confirmed, the other dates are unverified estimates provided by the relevant sources. In 1840 three of Daniel's grandchildren, Samuel (s/o Charles) and John & Margery (children of Joseph) emigrated to New South Wales, Australia together on the Clyde. Two years late in 1842 another grandchild, Joseph (s/o Joseph Sr) also emigrated to NSW, Australia. In 1839 & 1846 a Joseph Dunbar, boot & shoemaker, tanner & leatherseller (1839) & Boot & shoemaker (1846), resided Back Street, Strabane, Urney parish, Co Tyrone, Ireland.[37,38] The identity of this Joseph is unknown although it is possible he was an unknown grandson of Daniel.
